Trump Administration Orders Anthropic Remove Newly Released AI Models
A person familiar with the situation told media that US officials contacted the AI company at 1 p.m. ET (1700 GMT), directing it to withdraw the models over what they described as a "national security threat." No further explanation was reportedly provided.
The source said the government’s demand came despite Anthropic having already completed pre-release testing with federal authorities and receiving approval to launch the Fable model.
"We immediately sought to understand the specific nature of the threat so we could remediate it," said the source.
Later in the day, at approximately 5:30 p.m. (2230 GMT), the US Commerce Department sent Anthropic a formal letter outlining restrictions on who could access the models and where they could be deployed, the report said.
Following receipt of the letter, Anthropic began taking steps to withdraw the systems, according to media.
