Auditor Ball Alerts Beshear Administration of President Trump's Crackdown on Waste, Fraud, and Abuse

FRANKFORT, KY (August 13, 2026) – Today, Auditor Allison Ball sent a letter urging the Beshear administration to take seriously President Trump's crackdown on waste, fraud, and abuse within Kentucky's administration of public benefits programs.

Auditor Ball's letter follows a notice from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to all 50 states and their executive branches, indicating the federal government will no longer ignore chronic audit noncompliance, unresolved audit findings, and delinquent audit submissions without states risking federal funding reimbursement.

Many state employees have worked cooperatively with the Auditor's office to address findings. This cooperation most recently resulted in HHS deferring a penalty related to a finding from the Auditor's office about the Beshear administration's improper spending of Adoption Assistance Title IV-E funds. But the tone at the top of the Governor's administration does not reflect that desire to cooperate and fix problems. Auditor Ball says she wants "taxpayers to know that the Governor has consistently dismissed my office's reports and thus chooses to put Kentucky at-risk of losing federal funding. I am very grateful to see the Trump administration's reinforcement of accountability before taxpayer dollars and needed public benefits programs are put at further risk."

The Auditor's office will continue to collaborate with the Trump administration and remains committed to transparency and to holding government agencies accountable. Auditor Ball says she hopes “the Trump administration's firm stance will encourage the Beshear administration to recognize what my office has been insisting on for years—Kentucky taxpayers and public benefits recipients deserve a government that collaborates and cooperates to ensure that we are thoughtful and responsible with taxpayer funds."
