Hamilton County lawmakers: Local students encouraged to apply for House internship
STATEHOUSE (Sept. 14, 2026) – Hamilton County legislators are encouraging local students to apply for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program for the 2027 legislative session.
House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) said this paid, full-time internship is open to college students, recent graduates and students in law or graduate school from January through April.
"For young Hoosiers interested in government and public service, there are few experiences more valuable than the House internship," Huston said. "This opportunity helps students launch careers, build connections and discover the impact they can have in shaping the future of our state."
State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers) said interns work in the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis full-time Monday through Friday during the legislative session and gain practical knowledge of state government through active participation in the legislative process.
"An internship at the Statehouse gives students a head start that can pay dividends long after the legislative session ends," Jeter said. "The skills, relationships and experience they gain can help prepare them for whatever career path they choose."
State Rep. Danny Lopez (R-Carmel) said positions are available in legislative operations, policy and communications.
"Indiana has some of the best and brightest students in the country, and we want to give them an opportunity to put their talents to work," Lopez said. "Our internship program brings young people into the conversation and gives them a meaningful role in the work happening at the Statehouse."
State Rep. Hunter Smith (R-Zionsville) said this spring semester internship gives interested students opportunities to interact with state legislators, state agencies and private sector organizations, as well as participate in a weekly speaker series featuring Indiana civic leaders.
"The best way to learn about government and the policy issues impacting Hoosiers is to actively participate," said Smith, a member of the House Education Committee. "Our interns get to step into the process, work alongside the people making decisions and see the impact of their work firsthand."
"The legislative process can seem complicated from the outside, but our interns get an inside look at how state government really works," said State Rep. Alaina Shonkwiler (R-Noblesville). "They leave with better understanding of how decisions are made and the important role they can play in their communities."
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
